Block of the Month Project

Completed BOM / Challenge 2018-2019

Block of the Month - For 9 months we will be doing a 12 “ (finished) Sawtooth Star but each month there will be a different 6” (finished) block for the center. Use any style of fabric that you want - 30’s, batiks, brights, scrappy.

Challenge - Put your 9 blocks together in any way that you want. Be creative. You can add more blocks, you can add different blocks. Use whatever setting you want. The only requirement is that the finished top must include the original 9 blocks. At the August Picnic we will have a show and tell of our finished top (quilting optional) with ribbons for Viewer’s Choice.

Instructions (download complete instructions for this block here)

Cut 4 squares of background fabric 4 by 4 inch squares - Fabric 1

Cut 4 squares of different fabric (can be scrappy or the same) 4 by 4 inch squares- Fabric 2

Piecing Directions:

Draw two diagonal lines making an X on wrong side of Fabric 1 squares. (4 squares)

Put right sides of Fabric 1 and Fabric 2 squares together. Stitch on the drawn lines. Make four.

Cut the units into quarters. Meaning cut in half both horizontal and vertical. See diagram.

DO NOT CUT the sewing line. Fabric 1 and 2 units should measure 2" by 2". Check size and make sixteen.

Trim X "away from seam on one side and discard. Remaining unit should measure 2" by 2" . You

should make 16 units.

Assemble four matching triangle units to make the pinwheel. Pinwheel units should measure 3 1/2" by

3 1/2". Make four of them.

Now you are ready to assemble the Pinwheels block which should measure 6 1/2" by 6 1/2".

Continue with the 12" Sawtooth Star pattern from October and use this Pinwheels Block for the 6 1/2" center of the star block
