This block will use Christmas like but not Christmas patterned fabric of red

and green. The white will be provided by the guild.

• White packet will contain 12 - 2 1/2" squares and 4 - 6 1/2" X 1 1/2" rectangles
• Red Fabric - cut four 2 1/2'' X 6 1/2" rectangles and four 2 1/2" X 2 1/2" squares
• Green fabric - cut four 2 1/2" X 6 1/2" rectangles and four 2 1/2" X 2 1/2" squares and one 1 1/2" square

1. Draw a diagonal line on 8 of the white squares. With right sides together, layer square on the bottom end of green rectangles. Stitch on the line and trim.
2. With right sides together layer white square on the top end of red rectangles. Stitch and trim.
3. Sew red, white and green squares together making four sets .
4.  Assemble four units as shown in picture.
5. Assemble four matching units with the white rectangles and the small green (1  1/2") square as shown.

Cut 8" x 8" square of bright color

Using the included template cut one melon shape from a contrasting bright color. Cut two 2 1/2 x 2 1/2 squares from this same fabric.

Fold background square diagonally in half and press. Using this fold line

center the melon shape and applique using members preferred method.

Please use matching thread to keep sew line as invisible as possible. If you are machine appliqueing, fuse the melon shape onto the background square following the manufacturers instructions for the fusible web you are using.

Return blocks with the 2 1/2'' squares pinned to it. Sheryl and I will finish the

blocks.

Finished Block 12 1/2" X 12 1/2"

Members will use their own fabrics for this block in order to create a scrappy

look.

Cutting instructions

• Cut 8- 2 1/2" X 4 1/2" rectangles in assorted dark fall colors
• Cut 8- 2 1/2" X 4 1/2 rectangles in assorted cream/ beige tone on tone
• Cut 4- 2 1/2" x 6 1/2" rectangles in assorted dark fall colors

1. Using 2 1/2" X 4 1/2" rectangles place light fabric on top of a dark fabric with right sides together at a right angle. (See figure A).
2. Mark a diagonal line {see dotted line). Sew on the line then trim 1/4" from sewing line. (See figure B)
3. Sew a pieced unit from step one to each long side of 2 1/2" X 6 1/2" rectangle, rotating one of the units to create figure C.  Make four of these units.  6 1/2" X 6 1/2"
4. Sew the four units together as in figure D.

Red, blue and white - 10 1/2'' block

Members should use their own fabrics.

Cut - Four 3" squares white on white

         Four 3 3/4" squares white on white

         Four 3 3/4" squares red

         Four 3 3/4" squares blue

Use the half square triangle method of drawing a line diagonally.

Sew 1/4" on either side.  Cut in half on the Line.  Square off each 1/2

square triangle to 3".  Trim off the dog ears.

Using the 3 3/4" squares make 2 sets with red/white, 2 sets with blue

and white, and 2 sets with red/blue.

Layout the squares and 1/2 square triangles as in the picture.  Sew

each row together.  Press the seams for each row in opposite

directions. This way the seams will nest together when you sew it

together.

Completed block should measure 10 1/2"

Use multiple shades of blue fabric for the shaded areas of this pattern.  One 5" square and two 2 1/2'' squares.

The guild will provide the white/cream fabric precut for the remainder of the block .  Two 2 1/2" X 7" rectangles and two 2 1/2'' X 7'' rectangles and two 2 1/2" X 5" rectangles.

MAKE THE BLOCK

Seven-Patches

1. To make 1 block, gather the following:

• 1 square 5" x 5" of Print 1
• 2 squares 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" of Print 1
• 2 cream rectangles 2 1/2" x 5"
• 2 cream rectangles 2 1/2" x 7"

2. Sew 2 cream rectangles 2 1/2" x 5" to the sides of 1 square 5" x 5" of Print 1.   (Figure A)

3. Sew 1 Cream rectangle 2 1/2" x 7" to 1 square 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" of Print 1.  Make 2.  (Figure B)

4. Arrange the units from Steps 2 and 3 into rows, as shown.  Sew together the rows and press.  (Figure C)

Cut 2 - 3" white on white squares

Cut 2 - 3" black on black squares

Cut 2 - 2 1/2" x 5" white on white rectangles

Cut 2- 2 1/2 x 5" black on black rectangles

Cut 1- 5" square of any color (this is the thread part of the spool)

Make 4 - half square triangles using the 3" squares of black and white.

Draw a line on the diagonal, sew 1/4" either side, cut in half

Square up and trim to make 2 1/2" squares - this step is very important.

Do not skip or the block will not line up correctly.

Sew the block diagram together using the accompanying diagram.

We will be making this block out of pastel colors with print or solid and a white on white of your choice. Use the same pastel for the block. If making multiple blocks use a different pastel for each.

The basic Pinwheel block is simply four half square triangles put together in a four patch.

To make one 6 1/2" block you need two 3 7/8" squares of the white and two of the same pastel.

Draw a line corner to corner on the wrong side of the white squares. This will be the cutting line when you are done. Place the white square on top of the pastel square with right sides together. Sew a true 1/4" seam on either side of  the line. After sewing the 1/4" lines you will cut this square in half on the drawn cutting line.

You will now have two half square triangle squares which should measure 3 1/2".  Make a second set.

Sew the 4 pieces together to make the pinwheel.

The December block will be a simple 6" black and white nine patch block. In January we will be making a red and white snowball block and the plan is to combine the two blocks into one top.

Directions for nine-patch:

 Cut five 2 1/2" squares out of a tone-on-tone black fabric and four 2 1/2" squares out of any white-on-white fabric. Assemble with the black on the outside corners and center.  The white for the remaining squares.  Your finished block should measure 6 1/2" square.

The blocks are due at the January meeting.

We will be making this block with a black background. The background pieces are being provided.

We are asking members io make two portions of what will be a completed block. The directions are for one unit of the block. This will allow us to mix and balance the colors to make a truly scrappy top.

For Each Unit cut four - 2 1/2" squares and one 5" square out of bright

primary colors from your stash. Try to use a variety of colors. The four 2 1/2"  and 5" background black pieces were provided by guild.

From the 2 1/2" squares make two sets of four patches.

Using the 5" squares.  Draw a diagonal line on the colored fabric piece and then place black and colored squares right sides together. Stitch X" on both sides of the line, cut on center line. Press towards black creating two half square triangles.

Assemble as shown in diagram.

Repeat to make a second unit. Do not sew these units together.  Sheryl and Kathy will assemble to top.

October's block will be "Swedish Woven Hearts".  This is a non applique block.  The guild will hand out precut pieces for the background to any member interested in making this block.  Members can have multiple sets.  We are asking everyone to use a dark blue batik and a contrasting light colored blue batik.  This block requires very little fabric.  Hopefully members can use scraps form their stash or a fat quarter.  

As we receive completed blocks we will assemble the blocks into quilt tops which we can use for Quilt Bingo.  The pattern

Supplies:

• Blue- (1) 2 ½” WOF strip
• White- (4) 4” squares
• (8) 2 ½” squares

This is from Missouri Star Quilts- it helps to view the tutorial video “Stars and Stripes Quilt” as it’s a different technique than you may have done before.

1. Cut blue strip into (4) 4 “ rectangles and (4) 6” rectangles
2. Mark diagonal on wrong side of EACH 2 ½” white square with pencil or by folding.
3. Place white square on one end of each blue 4” strip, stitch on line. Trim and press seam toward blue.
4. Place white square on each blue 6” strip, stitch on line, trim, press.
5. Stitch 4” white square to each 4” blue star point along blue edge, press toward blue.
6. Stitch unit from step 6 to blue edge of 6” star point, press toward blue.
7. Join quadrants together to make star as seen in diagram.
